Job Description

PhillyVoice seeks a strong, independent Deputy Sports Editor to support the Managing Sports Editor. This position requires a skilled sports journalist and copyeditor who wants a larger role helping shape the course of a digital media sports outlet.

This position has a very unconventional work schedule that adjusts to the changing needs of the sports calendar in Philadelphia. The best applicants will be eager, organized, and efficient. This position requires someone who can both produce original content and editing beat writer and freelancer articles, ensuring PhillyVoice’s content is clear and engaging to readers. This position also helps manage social media post volumes and frequency strategies and assists in managing the overall sports editorial calendar.

Principal Responsibilities

▪ Assist in assigning, editing, formatting, and publishing content on PhillyVoice.com sports

▪ Manage and post stories to PhillyVoice.com social media channels

▪ Manage PhillyVoice.com on-site article placements for PhillyVoice.com sports

▪ Generate ideas to write and publish an average of two stories per day based on breaking sports news and other current topics from the Philadelphia sports universe

▪ Provide game coverage, second day coverage and write original content

▪ Have a proven understanding of the Philadelphia sports news that translates to story selection and production of readership goals

Requirements

▪ Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience writing for a news organization (professional experience and internships preferred). Links to published clips must be provided. A bachelor’s degree is required.

▪ Experience using a CMS. This includes adding photos, writing headlines, and embedding videos and social media posts in articles.

▪ Must be a self-starter capable of creating interesting story ideas; have solid communication skills; be a strong team player; and has the ability to work autonomously (whether remotely or in the office) in a fast-paced environment.

▪ Must be comfortable and have experience working in press boxes and media rooms covering athletics

▪ Knowledge of SEO best practices for news organizations

▪ Basic knowledge of HTML or willingness to learn elementary coding skills

▪ Understand and apply principles of journalistic best practices, as well PhillyVoice’s own standards

▪ An expert in Philadelphia (and national) sports.

Working Conditions

▪ Remote/co-working/shared office environment with moderate noise level; able to work remotely with manager’s approval

▪ Must be willing/able to work early mornings and/or evenings and weekend shifts

▪ Must be willing/able to remain in stationary position, often sitting for prolonged periods of time
