Philosophy:

Kapolei Charter School (KCS) is a free public charter school where all students will be welcome to enroll in KCS. KCS will provide customize, meaningful, and alternative educational opportunities to students who may not be successful in the traditional educational system. The school will provide an attractive, flexible learning environment with individualized attention and instruction to ensure all students who enter the school are able to become academically successful. It will be equipped to serve a largely underserved population, working to engage students in their education and provide them with meaningful opportunities to earn a high school diploma and industry certification or college credit to ensure a smooth transition into career success.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Kapolei Charter School, Life Coach I acts in the capacity of a school counselor, promoting continued student engagement to students who face issues beyond their academic performance. You will facilitate the team relationship and meet individually with students to assist in overcoming barriers which can impact each student’s educational progress Through these problem solving sessions, the Life Coach will suggest ways in which each student can overcome barriers and continue educational progress, and may work to assist the student and their families to obtain needed services beyond what the school can provide. The position will work with the instructional team in meeting the educational objectives and adhering to Hawaii DOE State Teaching Standards.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree Required in an area reflective of Human Services practice. Master’s degree preferred, in an area reflective of Human Services Practice.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in mentoring, counseling, advising or related field. Experience working with high school age students in a non-traditional setting and/or in adult education setting highly preferred.
  • Prior knowledge of working with at-risk youth/students and work experience in human services setting for high school students.
  • Ability to implement effective programs and techniques to help the student to become successful; speak and work effectively with students, teachers, parents and community members and to assess students' progress and modify learning activities and methods as necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

COUNSELING/CASE MANAGEMENT – 65%

  • Leads the intake process to introduce the student to the concept of life coaching support and identifies barriers that may impact his/her educational goals.
  • Assesses students’ life and family experiences, and gains an understanding of types of support the student or family may require for success.
  • Implement/manage school’s disciplinary plans and develops an environment that is consistently with the values and Mission of KCS, and ensures high quality programs that reflect the values of the school.
  • Becomes part of a reliable alliance and is able to connect emotionally and socially with group members. Provides support and maintains open communication with student.
  • Manages and monitors students’ learning experience to ensure student engagement and accomplishment of learning goals through individual and/or group meetings.
  • Develops and implements operating methods and procedures designed to provide quality education.
  • Follows established school policies, procedures and standards such as maintaining records, conferring with supervisor on individual cases, and communications with parent/guardian.
  • Identifies and connects students to community resources to remove barriers and support academic and/or personal goals. Initiate and maintain contact with key community partners (community agencies, educational institutions and employers) to enhance the menu of support services provided to students.
  • Updates and reviews students’ case records, service plans and goals on a regular basis to ensure development and maintenance are being met, based on program requirements and contract compliance.

STUDENT MANAGEMENT AND ASSESSMENT – 25%

  • Works with student to increase motivation, provide consistent reinforcement to learning, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback to consumers on all learning activities.
  • Participate cooperatively in the system of evaluation as stated in the charter’s guidelines.
  • Provides Job Readiness, basic skills enrichment training, applied learning opportunities (addressing community service, health and fitness, and humanities) to students. Works closely with students to assure the concepts put forth are clearly understood and students are able to display a degree of competency.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare student reports and communicate with parents regarding their student's progress.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES – 10%

  • Communicate with parents, administration, colleagues in a timely, consistent manner.
  • Actively participate in a professional learning community.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities.
  • Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees as agreed upon.
  • Attend all school functions as required by administration.
  • Attend all teacher in-service education required and provided by the administration.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in additional in-service activities and other learning opportunities and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
